Kabataan Partylist condemns the illegal arrests of members Bahaghari and other progressive groups amid Pride Protests
The sole youth representation in Congress condemns in the strongest terms the illegal arrest of 20 individuals taking part in the annual Pride Protests around noon, June 26, 2020 at the Mendiola Peace Arch. The mobilization was led by progressive LGBTQI+ group Bahaghari in participation to annual protests to forward the demands and rights of LGBTQI+ individuals, who are victims of discrimination perpetrated by a macho-feudal culture and exploitation under the current system.
As the Duterte administration is losing grip in its control of the health crisis, it chooses to take advantage of the pandemic to forward more anti-people and anti-democratic policies. We would like to remind the authorities that the people’s constitutional rights are not suspended even though the nation is under a lockdown and in a pandemic. The Pride Protest led by Bahaghari calls for free mass testing now, to oppose the jeepney phaseout policy, and the junking of the Anti-Terrorism bill, among many others – legitimate demands not only of the LGBTQI+, but also that of the broader masses.
“Hindi suspendido ang batayang karapatan sa mapayapang asembliya sa ilalim ng public health emergency. Mahigpit na nagpatupad ang Pride protesters ng hakbang pangkalusugan sa paninindigan para sa tuloy na laban para sa pantay na karapatan. Pride is protest. Pride is not a crime. We cannot let illegal arrests be part of the new normal,” Kabataan Partylist Represantative Sarah Elago remarks.####
